In this grave hour,
I have composed our final song
The last words of our love lost (of our love lost)

I called your hands home for years, for years, for years, for years on end.
It's become distant and I hate my helpless defiance.
No.

You have no problem finding me,
Although you only commit unintentionally. (unintentionally)

I do it for the Lord,
I do it for Chicago.
I once lived for you,
And I've never ever been
So wrong (wrong), wrong,
So wrong (wrong), wrong.

We keep building,
Building to find no release.

He used to have a great relationship with God, but he started to slip and do things that wouldn't please the Lord. The song is him realizing all of what he's done and refuses it to happen like that again.

Mike intentionally writes lyrics so that they can be interpreted in a variety of ways, he said so in an interview (i can't remember who with). So you're probably both right. Also, it's worth mentioning that he split up with his girlfriend of about 4 years in the months before they made this album, making the girlfriend angle pretty relevant.

This songs about his girlfriend of long time that he used to "worship" and then he realized that he put her in front of god. Not what the guy above said.

This song is about mike's girlfriend of 4 years who left him. They moved out and lived in chicago together hence the song name. Everyone else pretty much got the meaning right.

If they had been going out for about 4 years, the line "for years, for years, for years, for years on end" would fit perfectly, as he says it 4 times, and if you think about it, you could read it as "four years on end", since they sound the same. So the girlfriend idea fits.
