Shinedown – The Crow And The Butterfly lyrics
I painted your room at
Midnight, so I'd know
Yesterday was over
I put all your books
On the top shelf,
Even the one with
The four leaf clover
Man, I'm getting older
I took all your pictures
Off the wall and wrapped
Them in a news paper blanket
I haven't slept in what seems
Like a century, and now I can
Barely breathe

[Chorus:]
Just like a crow chasing the butterfly
Dandelions lost in the summer sky
When you and I were getting
High as outter space, I never
Thought you'd slip away
I guess I was just a little too late

You're words still serenade me,
You're allibies won't let me sleep
I've never heard such a haunting
Melody. Oh, it's killing me
You know I can barely breathe

[Chorus:]
Just like a crow chasing the butterfly
Dandelions lost in the summer sky
When you and I were getting
High as outter space, I never
Thought you'd slip away
I guess I was just a little too late

Just like a crow chasing the butterfly
Dandelions lost in the summer sky
When you and I were getting
High as outter space, I never
Thought you'd slip away -

Like a crow chasing the Butterfly
Dandelions lost in the summer sky
When you and I were getting
High as outter space, I never
Thought you'd slip away
I guess I was just a little too late

Just a little too late

Hey just wanted to say I have an interesting thing about me and this song but check it out. I have noticed that a lot of theor songs are about gang stalking, I realized that I too have been going through this for about 10 years now and my last name happens to be Crow. I also have a dandelion tattoo on my right leg and a butterfly tattoo on my left breast. I had got the 2 tattoos like 20 years ago feels like they wrote this song about me and just a few years ago my daughter painted a mural on my bedroom wall be night as we talked

I concur with bluidgirl66 but, think there's more to it.
I think the song is about the loss of a loved one by someone who knew it was going to happen (sooner or later) and they are bitter with themselves enough to try and get over the fact that is the case. But, they are hoping they, themself, is going to change and reflect back on the memories of their loss.
Why paint someone's room to remind you the day is over unless, it was a bad day and you'd like to forget it.
The book with the four leaf clover is a diary, why put it out of reach on a top shelf and just not throw it away?
Why wrap pictures taken off of the wall?
The guilt of feeling part of the problem and not part of the changing factor is going to destroy this person but they are hoping not. They were too weak to help and too weak to help themself.

I'm definitely torn with what this song is about. I love it and am drawn to it not only for the music and the lyrics and the sound of the singers voice but because of the few meanings it seems to have. The first meaning seems to be that things can be there and gone, in the blink of an eye. A crow won't chase a butterfly forever, dandelions only last a day or two before they seed out and are gone into the wind.
There seems to be a deep loss here, whether it be death or just someone left. It's almost hard to tell. The high may or may not be drug related, because most people who are in love will tell you that it is a feeling inside that runs deeper than any drug they've ingested before and the high is better and lasts longer. But just like a drug it has a darker side, where at some point you have to come down. Regardless of if coming down is forced or not, it is never pleasant.
He may have been too late with a lot of things; possibly the girl left in the middle of the night and didn't even say good bye. She grew up and grew out of their puppy love, or getting as high as outer space. She hopped a train and never looked back, leaving her possessions and pictures, clothes and memories behind. Or perhaps she did pass away and he was nothing but a by-stander. Watching the downward spiral and never stepping in front to try and slow it down or change its course. Regardless of how this person left, he is grieving and deeply saddened by it and the fact that he is unable to replace the person, and stop the feelings of regret.
