Savlonic – The Driver lyrics

I stole your keys cause you stole my heart
It seems like a fair trade to me
Now I will drive around in your car
It helps me to feel free

I drive over bridges and rivers
Being this far from you gives me shivers
I want to get away
But the flash on the fuel tank says I'm likely to stay

I'm awake you're not there I get to wondering
Where have you got to while I was a-slumbering
Look around you're not there and all my keys are gone
Why would you take them when you know that it is wrong?

But then I see your wallet next to your heart next to mine

Some think that this must be Freudian
Leaving my wallet behind
But girl you know I'm forgetful
Things often slip out of my mind

There was the time that I left the bath running
And flooded the room down the stairs
This is just one of the many examples
I use to prove to myself I really don't care

I'm awake you're not there I get to wondering
Where have you got to while I was a-slumbering
Look around you're not there and all my keys are gone
Why would you take them when you know that it is wrong?

But then I see your wallet next to your heart next to mine

Evident meaning here, not much to discuss.
The guy is most likely scared of a commitment, even though he knows he loves this girl. They might've been in a casual relationship or 'friends with benefits' to begin with. He didn't believe he'd ever develop such deep feelings for her. He takes her car to try and get away (obviously). The low fuel is an excuse for him not to get away.
He likens leaving his wallet to a 'freudian slip'; he claims he wanted to get away but in reality he wanted to stay with her. His concern about leaving his wallet was one of two things: either he took all of his items except the wallet, with the intention of leaving forever (why would he care about his wallet if he was only leaving temporarily?); or his wallet contained all of his money, which is a necessity if he was planning to refill the fuel tank at some point. Either way, it wouldn't be freudian if the wallet wasn't a necessity, but this is a minor detail.
Irrelevant point: I've been hearing "wrong" as "love" all this time. Huh, I must have impaired hearing.
