Rise Against – Voices Off Camera lyrics
Can you hear the desperate cries that are calling out your name?
Twisting your arms, holding out their hands
And tugging at your sleeve,
Do you feel this underlying sense of urgency
Or are you as blind as me?

I hit the ground and I'm still running
But I need a place to stay tonight,
I swear I'll be gone in the morning
I just need somewhere now

I can't bear the thought of losing,
I dread the attention winning brings
And ever since the day I came here
I can stand without your strings
I'm so sick of all these people
But I'm scared to be alone
And if this life has taught me anything
I forgot it long ago and so I

I hit the ground and I'm still running
But I need a place to stay tonight,
I swear I'll be gone in the morning
I just need somewhere warm to close my eyes
I hit the ground and I'm still running
But I need a place to stay tonight,
I swear I'll be gone in the morning
I just need somewhere warm to close my eyes

The heart is something you can't control
We either choose to follow or be left on our own
So we're leaving here on a less-travelled road
As desperate cries grow louder,
I know we're getting close, getting close

I hit the ground and I'm still running
But I need a place to stay tonight,
I swear I'll be gone in the morning
I just need somewhere warm to close my eyes
I hit the ground and I'm still running
But I need a place to stay tonight,
I swear I'll be gone in the morning
I just need somewhere warm to close my eyes

I had heard somewhere this was true, but I'm not 100% it seems likely nevertheless. I heard this song was about the decision tim mcilrath (the vocalist) had to make, whether to sell out and support the government monetarily or staying independent. This album being their last "independent" album, pushes me towards believing this, because the album after (siren song of the counter culture, recorded in vancouver bc) is recorded in a bigger name studio that isn't classified as independent. The reason why, I think he would have, made the choice to "sell out" is because he and the band wanted to spread their message of human and animal abuse, and the environment crashing, to those who need to hear it. Those who don't realize the cruelty the government instills on the poor, and unfortunate. Judging by the second verse (i can't bear the thought of losing, I dread the attention winning brings) clear shows some form of self battle with the number of paradoxes thrown in there. The fact very few musicians actually make it famous kinda makes sense for rise against to be "leaving here on a less traveled road" and with a goal to make a difference "[they] know [they're] getting close" to succeeding in this journey to make a difference. Being all vegetarian and peta supporters I think they'd also be making more money to donate to help these causes such as the greenpeace organization, peta and other animal and human rights organizations. People say they refuse to listen to anything past revos per minute because they "sold out to the government". I've heard it folks. But, while they did sell out I completely disagree. They sold out against the government.
They undoubtedly took advantage of their fame in the album "the sufferer and the witness" producing songs like "ready to fall" (originally to be name diaspora) about the environment and animals and sweatshops and such stating at the end of the music video "every action has a reaction; we've got one planet and one chance. " and other songs like "prayer of the refugee" directly about sweat shops and I believe homelessness as well. Each with music videos to not only speak their point but to visually represent it too. They later came out with well known "hero of war" which is obviously about war in a fairly sarcastic tone, and collapse (post-amerika) still putting out the same message against war, death, torture, and fossil fuels.
The bands message has succeeded their goals and has spared those " desperate cries that are calling out [their] name, twisting [their] arms holding out their hands and tugging at [their] sleeve" and with years to come, will no doubt spread messages and save millions with songs no different to this one.
Thanks for reading if you managed to get through this.
