(Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe)

This name I got we all were green
See could stop stop it will red
We could bind it in the cist
We could gather, throw a fit
Up to par, Katie buys a kitchen-size, but not me in
Sit and try for the big key, a waste o' time, sitting still

I'm the sun and you can read
I'm the sign and you're not deaf
We could bind it in the scythe
We could gather, throw a fit

(chorus)
Up to par, Katie buys a kitchen-size, but not me in
Sit and try for the big key, a waste o' time, sitting still
I, I, I can hear you, I, I, I can hear you, I, I, I can hear you

This name I got we all were green
See could stop stop it will red
We could bind it in the cist
We could gather, throw a fit

(repeat chorus)

You can gather when I talk, talk until you're blue
You could get away from me, get away from me

I'm up to par, Katie buys a kitchen-size, but not me in,
Sit and try for the big key, a waste o' time, sitting still
I, I, I can hear you, I, I, I can hear you, I, I, I can hear you
I, I, I can hear you, I, I, I can hear you, I, I, I can hear you
Can you hear me?

I've always thought much of stipe's early lyrics are rather impressionistic reflections on childhood and adolescence. I get the idea that sitting still has to do with the kind of emotional play that younger children engage in, full of posing and drama. The imagery i figure is either drawn from stipe's own life or else an abstracted image vocabulary that he uses to press his artistic goal which i think are mainly an exploration of the themes of childhood. This is not unkown in art. Gabriel garcia marquez (writer) mentioned that his main goal is was a kind of reconstruction of his childhood. There are others. However, literary themes and imagined events. For instance he has said that harbor coat (i saw this on youtube) was inspired by a fantasy about the erotic life of lillian hellman. But that is something he thought up in his adolescence so it doesn't conflict with my main assertion.
