I will light the match this mornin'
So I won't be alone
Watch as she lies silent
For soon night will be gone

Oh, I will stand arms outstretched
Pretend I'm free to roam
Oh, I will make my way
Through one more day in hell

How much difference does it make?
How much difference does it make?

I will hold the candle
'Til it burns up my arm
Oh, I'll keep takin' punches
Until their will grows tired

Oh, I will stare the sun down
Until my eyes go blind
Hey, I won't change direction
And I won't change my mind

How much difference does it make?
Mmm, how much difference does it make?
How much...

I'll swallow poison
Until I grow immune
I will scream my lungs out
'Til it fills this room

How much difference?
How much difference?

How much difference does it make?
How much difference does it make?

Oooh, ooh
Oooh, oooh...

I've been suffering from chronic pain for about a year. After a particularly trying day, while driving to work with this song blaring; i started to realize how much the lyrics resonate with how i feel everyday. Imho, this song is about someone who is in pain, has been for a long time, and finally decides to embarce it. As though he has reached a breaking point and moved beyond it. Embracing all of the pain and all of the anger and letting wash over him. It seems to me that this person has also realized that in the end, the sad and painful truth, is that no matter what he does, it likely won't make a difference. No matter what drastic measures are taken, no matter the lengths one is willing to go; in the end we can't change the course of certain things. When you realize that you can't affect change, that you can't make a difference, then the only solice is indifferenence.
