Of Monsters And Men – Little Talks lyrics
Hey!
Hey!
Hey!

I don't like walking around this old and empty house
So hold my hand, I'll walk with you my dear
The stairs creak as you sleep, it's keeping me awake
It's the house telling you to close your eyes
And some days I can't even dress myself
It's killing me to see you this way

'Cause though the truth may vary
This ship will carry
Our bodies safe to shore

Hey!
Hey!
Hey!

There's an old voice in my head that's holding me back
Well tell her that I miss our little talks

Soon it will be over and buried with our past
We used to play outside when we were young and full of life and full of love
Some days I don't know if I am wrong or right
Your mind is playing tricks on you my dear

'Cause though the truth may vary
This ship will carry
Our bodies safe to shore
Hey!
Don't listen to a word I say
Hey!
The screams all sound the same
Hey!
And though the truth may vary
This ship will carry
Our bodies safe to shore

Hey!
Hey!

You're gone, gone, gone away
I watched you disappear

All that's left is the ghost of you
Now we're torn, torn, torn apart
There's nothing we can do
Just let me go, we'll meet again soon
Now wait, wait, wait for me
Please hang around
I'll see you when I fall asleep
Hey!

Don't listen to a word I say
Hey!
The screams all sound the same
Hey!
And though the truth may vary
This ship will carry
Our bodies safe to shore x2

Though the truth may vary
This ship will carry
Our bodies safe to shore x2

I think this song is about a woman facing Alzheimer’s or some other sort of memory loss due to old age, and it’s the husband comforting her. She talks several times about how things don’t make sense, and how the “truth may vary” (the things she thinks aren’t always true but the husband makes her feel like they are to comfort her). There’s also talk of a “voice” sort of haunting her, which is present in a lot of Alzheimer’s patients. Even though they do not remember things, if somebody makes them sad and they forget about it 5 minutes later, they will still continue to feel sad and not understand. And the husband also says that it’s just her “mind playing tricks” with her.
In the bridge, I believe that’s where she just completely leaves and eventually dies. It says “all that’s left is a ghost of you” meaning that there’s just the lingering aftertaste of her soon after she’s lost all of her memories and comprehension of life. Eventually, they say “there’s nothing we can do, just let me go” which I think is when the husband finally admits that she’s gone. And then, of course, the final words of the bridge are about how when he dies he’ll meet her again.

I think the least biased interpretation is that someone is feeling like they're going crazy, and they have a voice, albeit it being a real person or not, telling them its going to be okay. My interpretation is of a woman getting old, and possibly contracting Alzthiemer's Disease (apologies for not spelling that correctly), and finds comfort in talking to her dead husband

I think this songs represents the process of grewing up. Every people have a way and unique experiences of how they are becoming adults and older. Some days of dont have sure of what youre gonna do about your life or have difficuties in fall asleep so you remember about you past and reminescence. Life can be rough sometimes and when we are in bad times we can get depressive and think about suicide but there is always someone who you can trust and can advice that isnt the better way. Life can be gray but if you hold it and go ahead it can turbs into colourful, like in the videoclip.

I believe this is the song of a woman suffering from depression because of lost loved one. She says, "I don't like walking around this old and empty house", which may mean that she is lonely and the house they once shared seems empty and old without him there. Next the man says, "So hold my hand I'll walk with you my dear", which may mean that she is hallucinating that he is there to comfort her. Next she says, "The stairs creak as you sleep, its keeping me awake" and the man says, "It is the house telling you to close your eyes". This makes me think that maybe the woman is becoming suicidal and the man is trying to lure her to her death (to him). What better line is there to support this than the next? "And somedays I can't even trust myself/its killing me to see you this way". She cannot trust herself to stay alive, And the man wants her to end her life so that she can be happy. "There's an old voice in my head that's holding me back" may refer to her conscience telling her that she can still be happy if she lives. The man says, "well tell her I miss our little talks", which might mean that her conscience us her when her lover was still alive, which would explain how the lover said he misses their little talks. "Soon it will be over and buried with our past/We used to play outside when we were young and full of life and full of love", is the man saying, 'when you die the pain will be over and we will be together' and the woman is saying that things have changed since you died and we grew up.

I believe this is a tragic love story. I think he is dead. She miss's him terribly. She is very old, tired and lonely, the house is so quiet without him she hears all of its settling, creeking etc. His ghost or memories are speaking to her. Trying to comfort her and or her comforting herself. Her own "old voice" tells her that this is non-sense stop believing in the ghost. But she wants to believe, she doesn't want to let go of him. He tells her to tell the old voice "I miss our little talks" the most important line in the song... The name of the song. She is torn... she wants to forget but she doesn't want to forget. Either action causes her great misery. Her only salvation... the ship. "The screams all sound the same" is her crying incessantly. She is tired of it. In the last verse he and she sing together. He is on the side of the dead and her in this world. They tell each other to "let go". She is old and they will be together soon in the afterlife. The ship is their vehicle (maybe God, Jesus) to their common place.. I assume "the shore" is heaven. That is my take.

I think it's about drugs and alcohol addiction she has had enough of using so she goes to rehab there is rehabs around where they walk you thru the house it's a journey like an odyssey it's a ship and if they complete the program the ship there are on carries them to shore safely.

I think this song is about a soldier who probably faced ptsd and was still physical present after war but mentally he was gone. She misses the old him and thinks he can get better but he won't. She misses their talks and how they were when they were young. Now its all screams and she's living a nightmare. She only gets relief from her abusive husband when she is sleeping and remembers the old him. She hopes and knows that eventually he will recover and turn back to himself again or somewhat of himself. I sing this song all the time with my friend David in front of big crowds and I cry every time I hear or sing it! Whether I'm alone or on stage in front of a bunch of people! Its a story of hope and that's what this song means to me :)
