Next To Normal – Superboy And The Invisible Girl lyrics
Natalie:
Superboy and the Invisible Girl...
Son of steel and daughter of air.
He's a hero, a lover, a prince—
She's not there
.

Superboy and the Invisible Girl...
Everything a kid ought to be.
He's immortal, forever alive—
Then there's me
.

I wish I could fly
And magically appear
And disappear.
I wish I could fly
I'd fly far away from here.

Superboy and the Invisible Girl...
He's the one you wish would appear.
He's your hero, forever your son—
He's not here.
I am here
.

Diana:
You know that's not true.
You're our little pride and joy,
Our perfect plan.
You know I love you...
I love you as much as I can
.

Natalie:
Take a look at the Invisible Girl...
Here she is, clear as the day.
Please look closely and find her before
She fades away
.

Natalie & Gabe:
Superboy and the Invisible Girl...
Son of steel and daughter of air.
He's a hero, a lover, a prince
She's not there...
She's not there...
She's not there...
She's not there
.

It is sung by Natalie, the daughter of Diana, a woman struggling with bipolar disorder. She is singing about how Diana doesn't act like Natalie exists, but treats her son like a "hero, lover and prince" even thought he died at only eighteen months. She sees him, has conversations with him, (in a hallucinogenic way) and loves him even though he isn't alive and Natalie is singing about how she wishes her mother treats her as her daughter, and not ignore her existence. This song is about the desperation she has to make her mom notice her instead of only treating her son like her child.

The song is sung by Natalie who feels like her parents don't pay attention to because they are worried more about her delusional mother who believes that her son is alive even though he died before he was even one. Her mother's condition is so bad that she spends more time "seeing" and "listening" to her "son" than her own daughter who is alive. Her father is a so too worried about his wife's hallucinations that he is indirectly spending more time paying attention to Natalie's dead brother than Natalie herself.
