New Christy Minstrels – Today lyrics
Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I'll taste your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine

A million tomorrows shall all pass away
Ere I forget all the joy that is mine today

I'll be a dandy and I'll be a rover
You'll know who I am by the song that I sing
I'll feast at your table, I'll sleep in your clover

Who cares what the morrow shall bring?

Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I'll taste your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine

I can't be contented with yesterdays glory
I can't live on promises winter to spring

Today is my moment and now is my story

I'll laugh and I'll cry and I'll sing

Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I'll taste your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine
A million tomorrows shall all pass away
Ere I forget all the joy that is mi-uh-ine today

In early 68, I was in the Marine Corp going through Boot Camp and ITR. There was a private joker who had a brain and can see the realities and relate them to others. Here I am years later writing words explaining what is wrong today in healthcare and our society, a bit more then the coffee-house Marine I was in the sixties. I would hum this song and sing its words quietly while driving in the heavy traffic with my wife of fifty years and she would silently listen to what i thought she could not hear. My black hair is gray, my body is weaker from the struggles of life, and I am tired and hurt from the impact of many things. And still she looks at me as if I was 22 when I was handsome and strong. We still laugh and I silently sing of the joys of our lives.

It speaks to the exquisite joy of new love and continues as it addresses enduring love. The metaphors are incredibly erotic, reminiscent of the Song of Solomon and passages from the Karma Sutra. The second stanza is lovely; reminds me of a beautiful line from one of the Romantic poets-"a thing of beauty is a joy forever". When I hear this, I'm immediately brought back to the time when I first fell in love. I relive that euphoric feeling of joy and remember irrationally feeling that no two people ever loved or were so closely connected. Our sweet memories never die and should be cherished for what they meant to us. My love later died (literally and figuratively) so what stanza 6 (I can't be contented...") suggests to me is that love endures (its memory) but also that it can come again as it did for me many years later. Our yesterdays are precious but every day is a new beginning where we are privileged to create new memories. -"Today is my moment and now is my story." Nothing is ever lost; everything we've experienced has brought each of us to where we are today.

Speaking only of the chorus, Isn't it special to learn, after all these years (56), what I actually meant when i put these simple words together on my motorcycle, between Hollywood and Encino? I sang it full-volume going sixty miles an hour and disturbed nobody. I sang it again to my wife when I arrived home, and she said, "That's nice..." I then spent the next few hours creating the verses, and it was a complete song the next morning when I sang it for my group, The New Christy Minstrels/ Nobody said a word. There was absolute silence. Finally, Larry Ramos said, "I think I can speak for everyone here...it's a piece of shit, the same shit you always write!" "Is that how the rest of you feel too?" I asked. Silence. "Well, you'd best get used to it, because you're going to sing it anyway." I owned the group. It took nearly a year to get a good recording, then it was Columbia's turn to resist. Bill Gallagher HATED the song and the record, but it became a hit in just five weeks. There's a dentist in Cincinnati, Brad Monti, who has the lyrics printed on the ceiling of his office, "For the benefit of the patients in the chair," he says, as he LOVES the song, claims it helped him deal with a life-changing downturn in his life. Thank God, after all this time, he now knows what those words actually mean. Say Thank You, Brad...

I hope you’re the real Randy Sparks and not somebody else trying to create folklore. I think your response is hilarious. I had forgotten all about this song (which my sister and I used to sing around the campfire a lot) — and then it just came back to me yesterday (when you’re over 65 these things happen) and I spent a day trying to remember all the lyrics On my own, which I did, so now I checked to be sure. And here you are throwing darts at everybody’s smarmy ideas of what it all meant. I love it! It’s a nice song. Maybe my sister and I can revive it at her son’s wedding in December. I’ll copy your remarks and share them — should be fun!

In 1968, I had a student summer job in a hotel by the sea in the Isle of Wight , UK. In the evenings , a beautiful girl called Jo would play her guitar and sing, mainly from a book of American songs such as Where have all the flowers gone? The one I liked best was Today. It caught the moment . Jo sang it as if she meant every word. I had never heard it before or since. I spent my whole life listening out for it on the radio. Then came the Internet where I discovered the New Christy Minstrels. Well Randy, I am not disappointed with your story. Your instincts that people would like the song proved correct, although I must say I preferred Jo's solo version, slightly quicker and less syrupy.

To me it means their life is very short and the things that you loved are so fleeting and here today so it seems and in the moment it is tomorrow and it is gone it also means to me hang on and love the day the best way you can so today you can sing the song of joy you remember from yesterday your memory will all fade away but you still have them today that's what's the song means to me.

I had always imagined this song to be about a soldier in World War II appreciating each day knowing it may be his last day on earth. Along the way, he may meet people who appreciate his efforts and offer food and shelter as he and his company make their way through the European country side. Can't say that I have lived a life with a quiet resolve that death may be waiting for me, but this song brings out a feeling that I imagine I experience once fear left. Until, Wikipedia, I didn't know the song was used in "Advanced to the Rear" which was set during the Civil War.

What the heck Randy Sparks! You sure slammed one of my favorite songs of yours in my 62 years young. The lyrics speak to relishing the moment of now and knowing that we’re building cherished memories of tomorrow. The song speaks to my spirit and soul of a life well lived. Thank you. Divinely inspiring.
