Michael W. Smith – Friends lyrics
Words: Deborah D. Smith
Music: Michael W. Smith

Packing up the dreams God planted
In the fertile soil of you

Can't believe the hopes He's granted
Means a chapter in your life is through
But we'll keep you close as always
It won't even seem you've gone

'Cause our hearts in big and small ways
Will keep the love that keeps us strong

Chorus:
And friends are friends forever
If the Lord's the Lord of them
And a friend will not say never
'Cause the welcome will not end
Though it's
hard to let you go
In the Father's hands we know
That a lifetime's not too long to live as friends.

With the faith and love God's given
Springing from the hope we know
We will pray the joy you'll live in
Is the strength that now you show

But we'll keep you close as always
It won't even seem you've gone
'Cause our hearts in big and small ways
Will keep the love that keeps us strong

Chorus

My family is leaving our church home this week. We have been here 7 years while my dad was the youth pastor. Many wonderful memories have been made and friends that will last a lifetime. I even met my husband here. It's so hard to leave this place and these people. I will be singing this song on our last day and it will always serve as a special reminder of the people we love.

This song is so poignant and meaningful to me and, I'm sure, to those who have been blessed to have had a true 'friend'. I met 'Hennie' in the 3rd grade, and we were friends for almost 55 years. She passed away 7 years ago; but I still miss her and think about her very often and all the wonderful times that we had together. I was the youngest child in my family and because my sister next in age to me was 7 years older than I was, it was as though I was an 'only' child; and since Hennie was an only child, we were not only best friends but 'sisters' in our hearts. Sometimes, during the course of our long relationship, we didn't see each other for a few years; but when we did get in touch, it was as though we had just talked 'yesterday', and we would get together at one of our homes or do lunch somewhere and literally talk for hours! And, even though we shared some sad times and lots of 'deep' conversations, Hennie had a wonderful, outgoing personality and she was very positive, affectionate and compassionate; and a true source of encouragement and happiness for me. I sincerely loved and appreciated Ahhenaonn Yancy-Porter, and I always will. Yes, it is so true that 'a lifetime is not too long to live as friends'!

This song reminds me of my best friend who I've known for years. I love her with all my heart? We've had our rough patches but we are still friends. She's been there through everything. She opened the door of life that I didn't know was there. I'm a changed person because of that. Of all the things I've gone through losing her forever would be the hardest thing I'd have to do. I almost lost her almost 2 years ago. She had 3rd degree burns on 90% of both her legs and I blamed myself for a long time. She still feels pain but other than that if you didn't know about it you wouldn't know anything happened to her. She's a strong-willed person. I kinda am to and I get that from her.

When I hear this song I am reminded of two of my dearest friends who as a child I grew up with and as a teen I lost both of them literally just days apart Boyce was killed in a car accident at age 16 on Jan 9th 1994 and Wes was murdered at age 20 by two other people that we all called friend son Jan 21st 1994 Although there deaths we tragic and life changing to at 17yr old child. But when I hear this song I am reminded of the days in Art class talking with Boyce about his guitar he was making or the way we got in trouble for talking to much in geometry getting moved across the room from each other and yelling across the room to talk to each other until she finally let us set next to each other again. I am also reminded of all the study hall talks with Wes the hanging out together with his niece aka my best friend the crazy fun nights we had at my families camp ground and lake. Or the 4x4ing at camping and parties at the fords, blizzard Ford, Bridget Rocks, Rockie Holler, Bernie's or the Water Shed and I no longer shed a tear but I smile and enjoy the memories as they live on in all of us who love them. This song was played at Both boys funerals and finally after 15 years I am able to remember the good and not just the tragic stuff.
