I really like this song. James Hetfield said he hates the song, and they've never played it live.

The phrase "Dont Tread On Me" comes from an American flag that has a snake on it. If the song doesn't have personal meaning, then it would be talking about America. Don't Tread On Us. On the flag is a rattle snake.
