Libera – When A Knight Won His Spurs lyrics
When a knight won his spurs in the stories of old
He was gentle and brave he was gallant and bold
With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand
For God and for valor he rode through the land

No charger have I, and no sword by my side
Yet still to adventure and battle I ride
Though back into storyland giants have fled
And the knights are no more and the dragons are dead

Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed
Against the dragons of anger the ogres of greed
And let me set free with the sword of my youth
From the castle of darkness the power of the truth

This song is a periodic song about a knight finally gaining courage after slaying all sorts of hideous but mythical creatures. It is also a very imaginative song as it talks about ogres, dragons and giants. Personally this brings memories as this was a hymn that my school would sing at important events and at an annual fair we would have on a field near our school. I find that it is a song that you could not put an age limit on as it could be sung by anyone including adults! This is what I find truly amazing in the world of songs and hymns; how it can be sung in many different ways and by a different voice but still mean the exact same thing!

We used to sing this song at our daily morning service at primary school in the 1950s. As children we loved it and it was my favourite hymn. To me it conjured up images of a brave knight going out to defend God's kingdom. Unfortunately I haven't come across anyone who knows it or remembers singing it in church, which is a shame because it has a fine tune. Aah, childhood days!
