The Battle Of Evermore lyrics

Queen of Light took her bow
And then she turned to go,
The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom
And walked the night alone.

Oh, dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the morn-ing light.
The dark Lord rides in force tonight
And time will tell us all.

Oh, throw down your plow and hoe,
Rest not to lock your homes.
Side by side we wait the might
Of the darkest of them all.

I hear the horses' thunder
Down in the valley below,
I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon,
Waiting for the eastern glow.

The apples of the valley hold
The seeds of happiness,
The ground is rich from tender care,
Repay, do not forget, no, no.
Oh, dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the morning light.

The apples turn to brown and black,
The tyrant's face is red.

Oh the war is common cry,
Pick up you swords and fly.
The sky is filled with good and bad
That mortals never know.

Oh, well, the night is long
The beads of time pass slow,
Tired eyes on the sunrise,
Waiting for the eastern glow.

The pain of war cannot exceed
The woe of aftermath,
The drums will shake the castle wall,
The ringwraiths ride in black,
Ride on.

Sing as you raise your bow,
Shoot straighter than before.
No comfort has the fire at night
That lights the face so cold.

Oh dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the mornin' light.
The magic runes are writ in gold
To bring the balance back.
Bring it back.

At last the sun is shining,
The clouds of blue roll by,
With flames from the dragon of darkness
The sunlight blinds his eyes.

It's a great song, with amazing lyrics too. It's kind of funny, some people say it's about Lord of the Rings, some people say it's about some Biblical type thing, some people say light against darkness (like Zarathustra and Ahriman) -- and the "angels of Avalon" reference suggests the Sidhe or faeries of Celtic tradition. I hear all these things in the lyrics -- then again, my first take on the lyrics, I thought I heard "waiting for the angels of Babylon" - if I had to give a meaning to this song, I'd say it weaves all these elements together, and then some. We've all heard Jimmy Page use the term CIA (Celtic-Indian-Arabic) to describe his music -- in this song is a rich deference to the themes we hold in common as humans (that can also sadly drive us apart). I think that's what they were going for -- at least, that's how I read it.

Wow. Really? This is about the bands favorite books: The Lord of the Rings. Read it again and listin to Ramble On and Misty Mountain Top.

Robert Plant wrote this song after reading a book on Scottish history. This is what most of the references are to. The song is written about the battle between night and day (or possibly could be interpreted as the battle between good and evil). Jimmy Page wrote the mandolin section with a mandolin he borrowed from John Paul Jones. Jimmy Page had not once played a mandolin before this.

I've always thought this was about Armeggedon. However, as much as Robert Plant was influenced by the Lord of the Rings, this could be about that battle.
