Nobody knows which way you'll go
I can't control you
I pray tomorrow is brighter than today
I should not try to live two lives
I only have one
I only have one
You have yours and I have mine
We only have one life
I watch you make the same mistake
You learn the hard way
I pray tomorrow you will hear
What love has to say [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/j/jj_heller/only_have_one.html ]
I should not try to live two lives
I only have one
I only have one
You have yours and I have mine
We only have one life
I try to hold you with an open hand
You run away
And you're faster than I am
I can lead you to the water
But I cannot make you drink
Is it too much to ask for you
To simply stop and think
Still I should not try to live two lives
I only have one
I only have one
You have yours and I have mine
We only have one life
And we only have one life
Yeah we only have one life
"only have one" seems to be a song about worshipping god with your life to me. This may be because of where i am in life as i listen to the song, but while studying worship this song came on at the exact moment i was studying worshipping god with your life. The verses seem to be from the perspective of god or and older adult/mentor who is seeing someone who is trying to live a split life; one half devoted to god and one half not. As christians we need to come to an understanding that this can't work, that when we worship god we can only truly worship with all of our being. The chorus seems to be an acknowledgment that the songwriter/main character has the realzation that she has one life and it can be lived only as one.
