I've got a really bad disease
It's got me begging
On my hands and knees
Take me to the emergency
'Cause something seems to be missing
Somebody take the pain away
It's like an ulcer bleeding in my brain
Send me to the pharmacy
So I can lose my memory
I'm elated
Medicated
Lord knows I tried to find a way to run away

I think they found another cure
For broken hearts and feeling insecure
You'd be surprised what I endure
What makes you feel so self-assured?

I need find a place to hide
You never know what could be
Waiting outside
The accidents that you could find
It's like some kind of suicide

So what ails you is what impales you
I feel like I've been crucified to be satisfied

I'm a victim of my symptom
I am my own worst enemy
You're a victim of your symptom
You are your own worst enemy
Know your enemy

I'm elated
Medicated
I am my own worst enemy
So what ails you is what impales you
You are your own worst enemy
You're a victim of the system
You are your own worst enemy
You're a victim of the system
You are your own worst enemy

It's about war with our own mind.. It's like we're thinking about somthing that bother us a lot.. And we're feeling so down.. And feeling so despair.. Tryin to escape from all of this.. From all the problem.. But useless..

So we need to fight every negative things from our mind and fight! That's why it says we're our own worst enemy.. Because our mind make it our problem worst..

So hang on! Don't run away.. And face off your problem in life..

I think that's the meaning of this song.. :)

This is the twelfth installment of the 21st Century Breakdown story.
It sounds like it is written from Gloria's perspective.

She has run away and is scared of herself, screaming for somebody to help her, maybe realizing there really is something wrong with her. She hates herself, she's mad at the world, and she's contemplating ending it all.

I think this song is just about hurting inside, feeling lost, or having a broken heart, or maybe going through something bad in life and it had seriously affected your life. I'm not sure, but this is one of my favourite songs from the album.
Once again, Green Day have succeeded in pleasing the fans. :)
