Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time
For y'all have knocked her up.
I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe
I was not offended
For I knew I had to rise above it all
Or drown in my own shit.

People are idiots. George clinton and eddie hazel were both under the influence of lsd and clinton told hazel to imagine his mother just passed away. Then halfway through the song clinton told hazel to imagine he just found out his mother is actually alive. You can hear the difference in the second half of the song.

It's a song about death. Hazel was asked to write a song as if he just found out his mother died. The lyrics were put in by george clinton afterward and don't really mean sh@t in this song.

A loss full of sadness and pain. If people really listen to the song the feeling is indescribable
I interpret the lyrics to maggotbrain as this:the greatest abuses to mankind have been committed by mankind. Abuses to our planet and to our fellow man. The maggots are abuse and injustice. The artist sees this clearly and accepts that this is a part of our humanity and our world. Not that it is correct 'simply that it is. He cant change it thus he is not offended by it. Becaude whatever injustice we endure we simply have to rise above it all or drown in our own misery.
I have come up with 2 meanings. Either of which could be true. (a) a drunken and doped out rockstar dosed up on some funky vitamin a, (acid, for those of you who are ignorant) and just sputtered out a few words that he thought sounded good at the time and people really enjoyed it becuause of the passion and drive of the powerful music driving the nonsense spewing from his mouth. Or, (b) upon dropping a funky dose of a some vitamin a, and any other combination of intoxicating substances, the writer or writees found themselves entering a parallel universe so far beyond anything any of us have ever known or believed in. Upon entering this universe they were given magical powers and learned to speak in code and this my friends is what we are seeing. This is something beyond any human explaination. So dark and mystical and powerful that if we were to truly discover the meaning, it would be too much for our simple human minds and we would either parish or spend the rest of our days blind, deafened and senseless from the knowledge we hold in our brain... Our maggot brain.
