Foster And Allen – Maggie lyrics
I wandered today to the hills, Maggie, to watch the scene below
The creek and the creaking old mill, Maggie, as we used to long, long ago
The green grove has gone from the hills, Maggie, where first the daisies sprung
The creaking old mill is still, Maggie, since you and I were young
Oh, they say that I'm feeble with age, Maggie, my steps are much slower than then
My face is a well written page, Maggie, and time all alone was the pen
(They say we have outlived our time, Maggie, as dated as the song that we sung
But to me you're as fair as we were, Maggie, when you and I were young.)
(They say we have outlived our time, Maggie, as dated as the song that we sung
But to me you're as fair as we were, Maggie, when you and I were young.)
When you and I were young

I was reading up on this and apparently the wife of the guy who wrote this had tb. During one of her severe bouts of illness he went down to the hill and wrote this poem. I'm assuming tb ravages your physical condition so the song is saying that no motter how she looks or how old she is, he still loves her. After they both died, their friend took the poem and turned it into this song.

Dads funeral yesterday, bless him, he was 91, had a very happy and long life married to mum for 62 years, played this song at his funeral and it was just so very meaningful, special thanks to Mr Foster and Mr Allen for giving the song to the world. Now Dad is laid to rest with Mum who died three years ago. Thank you Rita.
