Time it took us
To where the water was
That's what the water gave me
And time goes quicker
Between the two of us
Oh, my love, don't forsake me
Take what the water gave me
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
Pockets full of stones
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
And oh poor Atlas
The world's a beast of a burden
You've been holding on a long time
And all this longing
And the ships are left to rust
That's what the water gave us
So lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
Pockets full of stones
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/f/florence_and_the_machine/what_the_water_gave_me.html ]
'Cause they took your loved ones
But returned them in exchange for you
But would you have it any other way?
Would you have it any other way?
You could have had it any other way
'Cause she's a cruel mistress
And a bargain must be made
But oh, my love, don't forget me
But, I let the water take me
So, lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the over flow
Pockets full of stones
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
So, lay me down
Let the only sound
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
Pockets full of stones
Its about virginia woolf. There was an interview with florence and she said that she had heard the story about virginia woolf drowning herself by filling her pockets with stones and jumping in a river. So florence wrote a song about it...

P. S. It would seem that we are more connected than we might believe. That her sister listened to the song over and over plus other in hindsight.. Premonitions by others close to her. This song helps put that into perspective.

On dec 17, 2011 my 28 yr old daughter drowned from a seizure she had while filling the bath for her 2 yr old son. 3 hours later hertoday husband came homein from worka to findme her... Water overflowing down the drain. My younger daughter 23 later told me she had been listening to this cd over and over since early december. To me, the meaning is that the water took her and that the stones were her epilepsy. I have found it helpful to listen to this song, along with songs we played at her wake and grieve but also work through it to come out in the other side. By the way, i woke from a very sound sleep several weeks ago while sleeping in her bed to a powerful squeeze and her then saying i'm ok" thank you for reading this.

Shes talking about death. The meaning of this song is that basically she is willing to make a bargin with death to take her instead of her loved one and since water is the esence of life, her life taken in the water would mean would mean a new one will be cast ashore.

It seems something from old sea legends from the isles... Oceans were very much living forces that gave and took away... Very romantic... Read welsh, irish and scottish sea/water stories... They play important parts and are used constantly in her songs.

She scares me sometimes- is she telling her lover to please drawn her? Fill her pockets with stones, lay her down on the water and allow her to hear nothing but the sound of the water pull her body down? So intense!

It's about trusting yourself to the forces beyond your control when all is lost, and having the faith in your lover and in yourself that if it all goes pear shaped, there will always be memories.
