All alone,
It was always there you see.
And even on my own,
It was always standing next to me.
I can see it coming from the edge of the room.
Creeping in the streetlight.
Holding my hand in the pale gloom.
Can you see it coming now?
AAaaAAhhh...
I think I'm breaking down again...
AAaaAAhhh...
I think I'm breaking down...
All alone,
Even when I was a child,
I've always known,
There was something to be frightened of. [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/f/florence_and_the_machine/breaking_down.html ]
And I can see it coming from the edge of the room.
Creeping in the streetlight.
Holding my hand in the pale gloom.
Can you see it coming now?
AAaaAAhhh...
I think I'm breaking down again...
AAaaAAhhh...
I think I'm breaking down...
All alone,
On the edge of sleep,
My old familiar friend
Comes and lies down next to me.
And I can see it coming from the edge of the room.
Smiling in the streetlight.
Even with my eyes shut tight,
I still see it coming now.
AAaaAAhhh...
I think I'm breaking down again...
AAaaAAhhh...
I think I'm breaking down again...
AAaaAAhhh...
I think I'm breaking down again...
AAaaAAhhh...
I think I'm breaking down...
I agree with everyone... Who truly knows what the lovely florence means... I certainly feel myself she is referring to some depressive feeling... It's certainly not a happy day feeling to state the obvious but don't you love the beauty she brings, the spirituality to all sad...

A beautifully honest metaphorical representation of depression.

Great theories but the real meaning is about death. We break down when we die and we know it will happen from birth and internally fear it. We are born alone and we die alone. And when your time comes you will understand what this song is about.

Its about fear. Its inside every person and creeps up on us where ever we are, whether we're alone or not. But mostly, its there, holding our hand, never leaving us from childhood to adulthood.

This is about a kid being sexually abused by a parent or someone close to them; or dome other childhood nightmare that was real.

Sounds like a song about depression. (i notice that a lot of us seem to be interpreting it as their own personal struggle in song form. )

The song always made me think of some lovecraftian imaginary friend that was slowly chipping away at the person's sanity as it followed the person wherever he/she went

Look all im hearing is that she is being attacked by a vampire... Think about it like the old dracula movies where he comes flying in through the window and then picks up the sleeping girl to drink her blood... "and i can see you coming from the edge of the room, creeping in the streetlight. " vampires man!!!

The place called reality which boarders on the edge of fantasy. It's easy to imagine a world without pain but it quickly grasps your hand and reminds you of that which you cannot escape.
