Snowy Atlas Mountains lyrics

There are definitely some lines i'm not entirely sure about, in fact the whole thing is free to interpretation obviously, but, i think this is about two mountaineers.
I think they both went out one day, and got lost, 'when was a boy i went to far, i lost the tread in the darkest of space'. One of them tries to find the other, 'i'm coming out, looking for you', when he knows he's probably dead, 'how about your wife, i'll give her a good life', and later, breaking the news to the other person's family, 'my vehicle is in your drive'. The idea of him being 'not that low' might be when the rescue team finds the body at least, and reports it back, 'the wolves came on the radio/transmitted through a portal in the snowy atlas mountains'... Could be completely wrong though!
