turferguson is the most correct. they already stated in an interview that this song was about halo. they wrote it when they were playing it. they give you so many hints: covenant (aleins in halo), lockout (map in halo), spartans (main character).
To me...I believe it is talking about war in general and hoping that the one they love will still be there when they return or IF they return. It can be whatever a person makes of it, it is a personal preference. that's what's so great about music like this...it's for everyone cause it can hold different meanings.
Everything that ETF has ever written never has had one meaning. There are many complex meanings you or I could never catch, because some of them are in the guitar licks, some in the drums, but in the vox there are always many meanings. I take this song to be a resistance towards fake love. A real love won't leave your side, not even when things are over and the moment is gone. Its easy to love during a pressured situation, but how are you going to feel when you and that person are alone with naught to say?
