And what comes next?
A chance to save ourselves...

Imagine magma encrusted in rock
And on the surface of this world
All eyes are on the clock
All our empires, our philosophies
Our practiced faiths, our revolutions
Our proud sciences are but a flickering
In one day of the lives of the stars

We can breathe in space
They just don't want us to escape
We can breathe in space
They just don't want us to escape

And what comes next
The constellations, yes, all 88 of them
A chance to save ourselves
Like the G8, they meet to procrastinate
Greetings, we are an infant species
Crawling into our own premature decline
The north star is chairing the meeting
He knows we're spoilt
And he's sniggering at our histories

We can breathe in space
They just don't want us to escape
We can breathe in space
They just don't want us to escape

The hollow proposals mean we'll migrate
But they'll bleed us dry until the 11th hour
And when dawn breaks I'll sit and stagnate
With this metric tonne on your shoulders
How do you cope
We are an infant species
Crawling into our own premature decline
The north star is chairing the meeting
He knows we're spoilt
And he's sniggering at our histories

Let's prove the stars wrong
We've got to do this

I find it hard to believe that we are alone

we can breath in space, they just dont want us to escape, for me personally represents the high corprate buisneses that controll goverments around the world these days making all the decision are that obsessed on controlling the world by religion ( wich i personally think was created to give us some sort of fear/hope to keep us under controll) and money so they can be the elit of the world for the forseen future are holding us back from technolgies we ( the poeple) dont even dream possible, i believe we have the technolgies available now were we can have sources of energy used for fuel that dont leave us needing to burn the earth natural sources anymore, but if we knew that then the corrupt high goverment corps. wouldnt be able to make money and therfore wouldnt be able to controll the world and take forward there plan of global controll, theres lots of things i could explain about everything they sing about ( although i cannot be sure thats what there singing about) im pretty certain myself that it is. watch the zeitgiest movies, it explains everything and will open your eyes. on the enter shikari website they tell you to watch them as they are the most important 'movies' to view. so obviuosly you put 2 and 2 together there lyrics and the zeitgiest and you get there bid to let us know we need to move forward we need to stand up and realize now!

the great interpreter has it spot on! was just about to write something very simaler but then saw yours and thought it'd just look like im copying, so yea man thats exactly what i think, and i think most if not all there songs are based on this topic, but with little differences. the world is not what we think it is, we need to move forward for the good of the human race sooner rather than later

Just to start, this song is one of the few in which Rou truly uses is vocal abilities. On to the meaning, my interpretation would be not only basic assumption but also a reflection of the ideals of Enter Shikari. They are a band with very liberal, even anarchist, politics. Most of their songs are how the human race is bringing about its own destruction, and that in unity we can stop this.
We are an infant species crawling into our own premature decline.
This is a major hint that we are, as said before, bringing about our own destruction. As far as the chorus... I strongly believe that the breathing space is not to be taken literally. It is a metaphor implying that we should be able to overcome these obsticals, but the "sniggering" stars don't want us to succeed. Our past is a joke to them, a futile attempt at complex life turned to the corruption that riddles the world today. In response, they leave us trapped to perish on this world.
And what comes next? A chance to save ourselves... I believe the "coming next" refers not to an actual upcoming event but instead a call to look towards the future. Our short past can be rectified if we make steps to end our own corruption and demise.
The first part of the song seems to be a quick look at the past and a comparison to all else out there. What Rou says is true, everything we know of our own recoreded history and all else before, everything held dear to the human race, is just a hiccup in the history of the universe. "We are an infant species."
The reference to the north star is another metaphor. The stars in the universe are a representation of everything "out there." The North Star, one of the most noticable stars in our skies (besides our sun...) represents all of the universe with their eyes on Earth. The universe is just waiting for all of our corruption to come crashing down upon us.
"Let's prove the stars wrong, We've got to do this" is Shikari's call to action. We must CHANGE, or we will PERISH.
"I find it hard to believe that we are alone" is one of the only phrases in the song that I can't even make a fairly sure interpretation of. In my own opinion, I think this may be Shikari's way of expressing hope. They believe that other complex organisims are out in the universe (they constantly refer to an alien presence i.e. Mothership), and that if these other organisms could move past their crisis point then so can this world and its inhabitants. All in all, this song is captivating no matter what the true interpretation may be. Feel free to comment on my own meaning, whether its to agree or to rip it apart! ESFTW. peace :)

Well i think this song is based off the destruction of the earth, everything being destroyed.
    "And what comes next
    A chance to save ourselves
    Imagine magma encrusted in rock
And on the surface of this world
All eyes are on the clock
    All our empires, our philosophies
    Our practiced faiths, our revolutions
Our proud sciences are but a flickering
In one day of the lives of the stars"

I think its basically saying that we can stop it in a way, by going into space to escape it(title) or stop it . Look for refuge on other planets with another species.
    "Let's prove the stars wrong
    We've got to do this

I find it hard to believe that we are alone"
