Where once was light
Now darkness falls
Where once was love
Love is no more
Don't say -- goodbye
Don't say -- I didn't try...
These tears we cry
Are falling rain
For all the lies
You told us
The hurt, the blame!
And we will weep
To be so alone
We are lost!
We can never go home [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/e/emiliana_torrini/gollums_song.html ]
So in the end
I will be -- what I will be
No loyal friend
Was ever there for me
Now we say -- goodbye
We say -- you didn't try...
These tears you cry
Have come too late
Take back the lies
The hurt, the blame!
And you will weep
When you face the end alone
You are lost!
You can never go home
Never started out evil, but the power of sauron's ring was so great that gollum had no hope of defending himself against it. Thus, his soul was captured, and his life was forfeit. He paid the ultimate price for his obsession, but he saved the world by his destruction and the destruction of the one ring.

This a lament of total loneliness. Gollum's song interprets the despair of a creature who is utterly without the companionship of others. He is one who has committed fratricide for something that he couldn't keep... To what end? The soul-wrenching guilt stays with him for over 500 years while he holds the ring. That loneliness and guilt for having killed his brother warps and twists him until he no longer resembles that from which he came. Living for 500 years, having had his kin and all he knew turn to dust, he has no recollection of he days as one of the "river folk" (hobbit, maybe? ). Sad... Totally without hope.
