She packed my bags last night, pre-flight
Zero hour, nine a.m.
And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then

I miss the Earth so much, I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time ‘til touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no, I'm a rocket man
Rocket man, burning out his fuse up here alone

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time ‘til touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no, I'm a rocket man
Rocket man, burning out his fuse up here alone

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them if you did

And all this science, I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
A rocket man, a rocket man

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time ‘til touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no, I'm a rocket man
Rocket man, burning out his fuse up here alone

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time ‘til touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no, I'm a rocket man
Rocket man, burning out his fuse up here alone

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time

Based on the Bradbury short story "The Rocket Man," John and Taupin's 1972 classic features thematic elements that the writer addressed throughout his work, including the ways in which humans react to the isolation of space travel. "She packed my bags last night pre-flight," sings John, an echo of Bradbury's plot, in which an astronaut leaves his wife and son on Earth as he travels through outer space.

I think its about eltons time as a bisexual and his way of saying he's tired of the heterosexual lifestyle and tired of keeping his gay lifestyle hidden from his girlfriend at the time and its his way of saying to the media and fans saying no i'm a rocketman i prefer cock ''rocketman" was a closeted way of saying ur gay without offending the biggoted heterosexuals out there and hey its just my take on this song cause back in the 60's and seventies u couldn't come out and just say hey i'm gay u'd lose half of ur sales at least maybe more this was just a sneaky artistic way of saying that

Cmadg25 is entirely wrong in his suppososition that the lyrics are about the life of an astronaut and drug abuse. The lyrics actually arise from a week elton spent in an isolation ward after contracting a rare skin disease from a block of fromunda.

Fromunda is a cheese much adored by worshippers of the golden rivet, it is very salty to taste with the consistancy of slighty stale philidelphia.

Botters rash was the name of the skin disease elton suffered from. It manifests itself as a red and angry starfish 2" away from the nether regions.

It means vote republican if you want to continue moving humanity forward with such wonderful achievements as space travel and all of the technological innovations that come from it (computers, microwave ovens, lcd tv's and displays, digital cameras and watches, etc.). The dem's have killed the space program and used the money to bail out dead-beat homeowners and wall street bankers.

    Cmadg25.

It is clear that whoever wrote this song, wether it be elton or his lyricist, used the life of an astronaut to symbolize whatever theme they were trying to get across to the listener. That theme, it seems is either the seperation from reality due to drugs or a lifestyle that they are forced to live, or the seperation of themselves and someone they love. It is definately not just about an astronaut although the words are that doesn't mean jack when you are talking about songs, books, and poems. If you took everything at face value then the stories of oliver twist and guliver's travelers were about a young poor boy and a guy with a bunch of tiny poeple, and they would have not caused the drastic reforms that they caused in england. So, in conclusion, the song about the effects of drug abuse or personal detatchment through the sybolism of the life of an astronaut.
