Elton John – Rocket Man lyrics
She packed my bags last night, pre-flight
Zero hour, nine A. M.
And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then

I miss the Earth so much, I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time 'til touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no, I'm a rocket man
Rocket man, burning out his fuse up here alone

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time 'til touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no, I'm a rocket man
Rocket man, burning out his fuse up here alone

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them if you did

And all this science, I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
A rocket man, a rocket man

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time 'til touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no, I'm a rocket man
Rocket man, burning out his fuse up here alone

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time 'til touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no, I'm a rocket man
Rocket man, burning out his fuse up here alone

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time

This song is clearly about a drug addicts battle with addiction and the desire to be high vs the desire to be with his family. Its pretty clear, one huge metaphor. Lines like "high as a kite", "timeless flight", "burning out his fuse up here alone", "I think it's gonna be a long long time till touchdown brings me round", "I'm not the man they think I am at home". He's living two lives, a family life and his habit and he's struggling between choosing. I always thought this was kinda simple and clear.

I think its about eltons time as a bisexual and his way of saying he's tired of the heterosexual lifestyle and tired of keeping his g** lifestyle hidden from his girlfriend at the time and its his way of saying to the media and fans saying no I'm a rocketman I prefer c*** 'rocketman" was a closeted way of saying ur g** without offending the biggoted heterosexuals out there and hey its just my take on this song cause back in the 60's and seventies you couldn't come out and just say hey I'm g** u'd lose half of ur sales at least maybe more this was just a sneaky artistic way of saying that.

It is clear that whoever wrote this song, wether it be elton or his lyricist, used the life of an astronaut to symbolize whatever theme they were trying to get across to the listener. That theme, it seems is either the seperation from reality due to drugs or a lifestyle that they are forced to live, or the seperation of themselves and someone they love. It is definately not just about an astronaut although the words are that doesn't mean jack when you are talking about songs, books, and poems. If you took everything at face value then the stories of oliver twist and guliver's travelers were about a young poor boy and a guy with a bunch of tiny poeple, and they would have not caused the drastic reforms that they caused in england. So, in conclusion, the song about the effects of drug abuse or personal detatchment through the sybolism of the life of an astronaut.

Go to the vevo version of rocket man on YouTube. While the contemporary elton is performing onstage, a giant screen behind him has an actor portraying the young (early 70s) elton rock star surrounded by groupies and temptation; his wife and child are minimized and overlooked with all the adoring fans surrounding him and clamboring for attention before he has to go onstage. The surreal and detached life of a famous star is portrayed by this song.

To me just a fun loving song for the most part. Could be about the loniness of an astronaut could also see a travling salesman or a over the road trucky identifying with the lyrics. Really don't feel any real deep-seated meaning Elton always been pretty open in his life sexaul preference drug use ect.

Cmadg25 is entirely wrong in his suppososition that the lyrics are about the life of an astronaut and drug abuse. The lyrics actually arise from a week elton spent in an isolation ward after contracting a rare skin disease from a block of fromunda.
Fromunda is a cheese much adored by worshippers of the golden rivet, it is very salty to taste with the consistancy of slighty stale philidelphia.
Botters rash was the name of the skin disease elton suffered from. It manifests itself as a red and angry starfish 2" away from the nether regions.
