Hey kids, shake it loose together
The spotlight's hitting something
That's been known to change the weather
We'll kill the fatted calf tonight
So stick around
You're gonna hear electric music
Solid walls of sound

Say, Candy and Ronnie, have you seen them yet
But they're so spaced out, Bennie and the Jets
Oh but they're weird and they're wonderful
Oh Bennie she's really keen
She's got electric boots a mohair suit
You know I read it in a magazine
Bennie and the Jets

Hey kids, plug into the faithless
Maybe they're blinded
But Bennie makes them ageless
We shall survive, let us take ourselves along
Where we fight our parents out in the streets
To find who's right and who's wrong

I think its describing the care-free mindset of the 70s. Bennie is like a character that elton john is describing. The song is just saying cut loose, and have fun. I wish i could've lived in the seventies!

In the context of the early 70s you have to take this song as a reflection of the general and sub pop culture. There seems to be a Warhol/Factory drag queen thing afloat that might also rub up against the ambience of psychedelic/amphetimine music culture via Woodstock/Altamont. There are a lot of crowd noises incident in Elton's take.

Good or even great art always allows room for interpretation. Benny and the Jets is a very good example. We, the audience can take of it what we will.

I wanted to mention that I totally sided with Elton when he let loose a few years ago in outrage of the recording industries' overuse of vocal tuning processors. What on earth would Hank Williams think of Taylor Swift?
