The song is about self-realization. She is stating the only thing that can be honestly stated and that is awareness of presence, the "i am". What I am is what I am. I am that I am.
Philosophy and religion are mental pacifiers that enable one to feel warm and fuzzy and good about themselves, while keeping one asleep in the dreamstate that we call conventional life - nothing more than that.
"chuck me into shallow water before i get too deep" is a reminder to keep it simple and not indulge in lofty philosophical discourse that would serve to take one away from the simplicity of the "i am", which all that is.

Edie was one of the last true one-hit-wonders. Since then, it has become more of a one-album-wonder, since recording companies won't push just a single song.
The song is a psycho-spiritual journey through confused thoughts. The only thing she is certain of is that she isn't certain of much, but she won't pretend to be a certain "way".
If she was to shake your hand, would she be meeting you, or a "best behaviour" you?

Wants to be real and truly believe what is real. Anything too complex to raise questions and doubts is to be discarded for provable facts so basic and simple they are undeniable. Then you are not misled, something that would cause us to lose our way. At least you know who and where you are if you only accept basic truthful undeniable facts like the world is round, or pigs can't fly.

Fact: Single mom's worry about a man who may be crazy around their little girl.
Regardless of how much she may want to be with him. One I step outside the house.
Fantasy leave's and reality is just there. You can toss cliche's all day, this I know doesn't change.
