I'm not aware of too many things,
But I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Philosophy is the talk on a cereal box.
Religion is the smile on a dog.
I'm not aware of too many things,
But I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Choke me in the shallow water before I get too deep.
What I am is what I am.
Are you what you are - or what?
I'm not aware of too many things,
But I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Philosophy is a walk on the slippery rocks.
Religion is a light in the fog.
I'm not aware of too many things,
But I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Choke me in the shallow water before I get too deep.
What I am is what I am.
Are you what you are - or what?
Don't let me get too deep. [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/e/edie_brickell/what_i_am.html ]

This song seems to be making fun of people who are always trying to find "the meaning of life" chuck me in the shallow water before i get to deep... Is like "slap me in the face before i start sounding like that"

The smile of a dog was a part of a commercial back when this song came out (budweiser? ) so those lyrics are a definite dig at our commercial and shallow culture.

"religion is the smile of a dog" means just cause it smiles or looks or sounds good, doesn't mean it won't bite you. The song also states, "religion,is a light in the fog". So religion (true religion) is a light in the darkness but it can bite you if you're not careful.
Meaning? Ultimately it's defining one's personality, perspectives and being carefree, and the heck what the world might think about him/her... I think that's what the song means...
I think the line "religon is the smile on a dog" means religon is just so poeple have something to follow and there just iggnirantly happy with that i think...
