Doves Ambition lyrics

So ambition cut you down
Ain't a love as perfect
Everybody knows it
Something drove you down

Something as good
Something new
Somebody good
Our ambition cuts you down
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/d/doves/ambition.html ]
There's not a love that's perfect
But I, I live in hope

Somebody good
Somebody new
Something as good
Something that's mine

Ain't a love that's perfect
Everybody knows it
Ambition cuts us down

This is the song used in the final love scene between brian and justin in queer as folk, and their relationship perfectly demonstrates the meaning of the song. They are so completely in love and are so perfect for each other ("ain't a love as perfect / everybody knows it") but life just gets in their way. They want different things and need to be in two different places at the same time so they cancel their wedding so that justin can pursue his dream of becoming an artist in nyc while brian's career is in pittsburgh ("ambition cuts us down"). But brian remains hopeful that justin will come back one day so they can have another chance together ("but i, i live in hope"). Even though nobody in the world makes brian as happy as justin, and vice versa ("ain't a love as perfect"), they also know that nobody and no relationship is perfect ("ain't a love that's perfect"). Sometimes people can get distracted by other things ("somebody good / somebody new / something as good") and that can lead to the destruction of an otherwise "perfect" relationship ("ambition cuts us down"). Relationships are hard, and letting somebody go is one of the hardest things that a person can ever do. It is an intensely sad song and set the perfect mood for the final love scene on queer as folk.

It's kind of like he always falls in love. He always tries, but he can't seem to find the one.

"aint a love that's perfect
everybody knows it
ambition cuts us down. "

He's pretty much hopeless already. You get your hopes up, and when it doesn't work out, you feel horrible ("ambition cuts us down")

It's almost like a "don't even try, because you're gonna end up even worse than before. "

Made me cry the first time i heard it, hehe ^__^'
