Dionne Warwick – Windows Of The World lyrics
The windows of the world are covered with rain
Where is the sunshine we once knew
Everybody knows when little children play
They need a sunny day to grow straight and tall
Let the sun shine through

The windows of the world are covered with rain
When will those black skies turn to blue
Everybody knows when boys grow into men
They start to wonder when their country will call
Let the sun shine through

The windows of the world are covered with rain
What is the whole world coming to
Everybody knows when men cannot be friends
Their quarrel often ends where some have to die
Let the sun shine through

The windows of the world are covered with rain
There must be something we can do
Everybody knows whenever rain appears
It's really angel tears, how long must they cry
Let the sun shine through

Ooh... Ooh...
Mmm... Mmm...

It must be remembered this song came out in 1967 at the height of the viet nam war. It could therefore be considered an artfully contrived anti-war sentiment: "everybody knows when boys grow into men they start to wonder when their country will call," and "everybody knows when men cannot be friends their quarrel often ends where some have to die," are direct references to the call of the military draft and induction into the army.
The song is an oversimplification (as songs often are because of time limitations) for most of those men who served in v n did not have any personal quarrel with their enemies but were instead told to fight for god and country. However, the fight is never for god, but always for country.
Windows of the world is an appeal for all men to come to their senses, "there must be something we can do. " this was jfk's vision too for he not only feared for the future of mankind, he was directly involved in diverting the impending fate of the world during the cuban missile crisis.
This song is highly symbolic of the sentiment of peace-loving people during one of the most turbulent eras in modern history and for that reason is a favorite of mine even though it was not necessarily a chart-busting hit.
