My achievements seem so humble
While you're making wine from water
While my hand work the cold soil
All you toch turns into gold
And I don't wanna be like you
I don't wanna be like you
It seems like you outrun me every time
I want to be you
Why can't I erase you from my mind
(2x) [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/d/delain/invidia.html ]
All the heroes in the gutter
Finally get their ever after
As they lay their final glance
Upon your ever shining armor
And I don't want to be like you
I don't wanna be like you
It seems like you outrun me every time
I want to be you
Why can't I erase you from my mind
(2x)
Looking from a disctance,
The diffrence seems so small
Has the grass been greener
On the other side at all?
I don't wanna be like you
It seems like you outrun me every time
I want to be you
Why can't I erase you from my mind
(2x)
In latin, "invidia" refers to jealousy, or envy. This song speaks of how the singer doesn't just want to be like a person; she wants to be that person, and all of that one's varied accomplishments.
Naturally, this never happens, so in the end all she wants to do is erase that person from her mind, so that she can cease the feeling of crushing shame that occurs when she is constantly exceeded. But she can't even do that, because her envy causes her to continually look at that other person.
And in the bridge, when the lyrics switch to the male vocalist, there's a view from the outside. He introduces the concept that perhaps she and object of her envy are not so different, and might even be on something of the same level, but her jealousy has blinded her.
The very last instance of the chorus shows that she has still failed to realize this, and continues to live on in her invidia.
