I am an outlaw
I was born an outlaw's son
My legacy is the highway
On the highway, I will run

In one hand, I've a Bible
In the other, I've got a gun
Well, don't you know me
I'm the wanted one

Woman, don't try to love me
Don't try to understand
A life upon the road is
The life of an outlaw man

Left my Marita
Was down in Santa Fe
Headed for San Francisco
In a '56 Chevrolet

All of my friends are strangers
Who quickly come and go
And all my love is in danger
I steal hearts and souls

On the Barbary Coast
I'll even leave my sign
Blew me through the shadows
To commit my act of crime

Some people call me Abel
Some people call me Cain
Some people call me sinner, Lord
Some people call me saint

This is an awesome, ornery song. I loved it growing up in the seventies.Great imagery. The song is laid out so simply, perfect really. The original recording had as John Wayne might call it "true grit." A song that should not be forgotten. It ranks as a favorite. What it means. I don't know. What it means to me lies in the mystical mirage . It could be anything. It could be anybody. It is life in it's truest sense. I put this in the same genre as Jo Jo Gunn's Ride,Ride,Ride, although it's a little better. Also some of the work of the California bands, most notable Spirit. I'd rank this record with some of the same authenticity as Kitty Wells, George Jones, Ernest Tubb, and Johnny Rivers, along with String Bean and some Detroit soul.
