Daughter – Youth lyrics

Shadows settle on the place, that you left.
Our minds are troubled by the emptiness.
Destroy the middle, it's a waste of time.
From the perfect start to the finish line.

And if you're still breathing, you're the lucky ones.
'Cause most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs.
Setting fire to our insides for fun
Collecting names of the lovers that went wrong
The lovers that went wrong

We are the reckless,
We are the wild youth
Chasing visions of our futures
One day we'll reveal the truth

That one will die before he gets there.

And if you're still bleeding, you're the lucky ones.
'Cause most of our feelings, they are dead and they are gone.
We're setting fire to our insides for fun.
Collecting pictures from the flood that wrecked our home,
It was a flood that wrecked this...

... and you caused it...
... and you caused it...
... and you caused it...

Well I've lost it all, I'm just a silouhette,
A lifeless face that you'll soon forget,
My eyes are damp from the words you left,
Ringing in my head, when you broke my chest.
Ringing in my head, when you broke my chest.

And if you're in love, then you are the lucky one,
'Cause most of us are bitter over someone.
Setting fire to our insides for fun,
To distract our hearts from ever missing them.
But I'm forever missing him.

And you caused it,
And you caused it,
And you caused it

I believe the whole song is about the feeling people usually get when they are shortly pre-/post-30 and still have no direction where to go. Directionless in every way, in relationships, job- and life-wise. It makes me sad but it pretty much sums up this feeling that I get being around my friends. We're all pretty well educated, well catered for in every circumstance one could imagine. But still. Something seems to be missing all the time.

I think that the song is about the lie that is the "american dream". My generation "the reckless, wild youth" is starting to realize what our parents and grandparents generations so blindly followed is not truly achievable. We've grown up hearing and seeing that to be happy, you have to go to college (acquire enormous amounts of debt that will never be repaid), get a career (a job that we hate to help repay said debt), get married to our "one true love" (disney movie brainwash), and have lots of kids that we can't truly take care of, because we're too busy working our lives away to really be there for them which will cause lots of personality issues, and create damaged humans like ourselves, and our parents before us. We're just starting to see the pattern.

I think the whole meaning of this song is this thing: Emptiness. Caused of a psychological problem, of a depression, of a broken love or of the loss of a beloved person.
Our whole society suffers from this loony: The emptiness. There is nothing to reach anymore. Everything, what we're doing, is destroying the nature. Everything what we're doing has somebody already done. Everything what we're doing is useless, cause what is the benefit of one good thing in a world, destroyed like ours? What is the benefit of saving one soul when every second are dying hundreds from war? What is the benefit of our life? This is our problem. Our brains have become ill. We have become empty, ill machines.

My thoughts on this lyrics are simple:.
He left her (stop loving her) and both were surprise because they actually don't understand how they get to this point (their relationship is empty for quite sometime now and they didn't notice until now). Trying to justify. To say who's to blame (destroy the middle) is a waste of time. Just accept they had a good relationship and it's over now.

Anyone that still believes in love is lucky because most of us don't believe anymore and we are suffering (heaving through.) because of that. She puts her self in a state of numbness (Setting fire.) to have fun. Partying, neglecting herself, meeting people. Incapable to love once more she sleeps around (collecting names).

She goes to the start the relationship (to the start of all our first love relationships). Young, genuine love. Living fully the love they have. Full of plans and dreams that they made together. A naive love and one day reality strikes: true love and fairy tales don't exist - one love will die and destroys their future.

The rest is easy to understand if you follow this line of thought.

Really good song. Full of feeling (pain).

This song is a different meaning to everyone. My mom died unexpectedly when I was only but ten years old. When your young you don't expect it. Death. Its such a cold word. It sparks a different past image or moment or a personal death or non-personal death in everyone, or at least those who have experienced death. I'm a "youth". I've made mistakes. Young love in hard, tragic, and cruel. Everyone who listens to this song, in my opinion, will have a different memory, or past "wreckless-youth-lovers" experience. I just wanted you people who view these lyrics. You. Are. Not. Alone. Imagine a 10 year old little girl walking into a classroom after experiencing the worst personal loss yet in her life. Her mother. Dead. Gone. I remember walking into the classroom looking at each one of my classmates faces and thinking to myself when they look back into my eyes, "you have a mom". Each one of them, when we looked at each other, I thought it to myself in my head. I hate death, and the odds were certainly not in my favor that day, but, honestly, whem were the ever? Just remember that you are loved. To keep you head up high. And dust off your shoulders. Its alright. No, its not over :) god bless.
