At night they would go walking ‘til the breaking of the day,
The morning is for sleeping…
Through the dark streets they go searching to seek God in their own way,
Save the nighttime for your weeping…
Your weeping…

Singing la lalalala la lй…
And the night over London lay.
So we rode down to the river where the Victoria ghosts pray
for their curses to be broken…
We’d go wandering neath the arches where the witches are and they say
There are ghost towns in the ocean…
The ocean…
Singing la lalalala la lй…
And the night over London lay.

God is in the houses and God is in my head… and all the cemeteries in London…
I see God come in my garden, but I don’t know what he said,
For my heart, it wasn’t open…
Not open…

Singing la lalalala la lй…
and the night over London lay.
Singing la lalalala la lй…
There's no light over London today.

I love this song. It's so wonderful. It's like the darkness swirls around this song. Thank you GirlMJ for putting the correct lyrics on here. I appreciate it!

I think this song is in reference to the crash of the titanic.
The line "there are ghost towns in the ocean" could be refering to the ship at the seafloor with the spirits of its dead still there (the ship being the town, spirits being the townfolk)
And the line, "i see god enter my garden, but i don't know what he said, for my heart, it wasn't open" could mean that he lost a friend or familly member in the titanic, and now hates god for letting them die.
The last line, "there's no light over london today. " could be a way of saying that many were mourning their lost, thus meaning there was no light in their housholds or hearts.

That's just my interpretation, and i'm probably wrong.

This song is extremely osaaam! Don't u all think that it is basely similar to the shakespeare's story 'macbeth',not that all similar to.. But i think some of the words in the lyrics makes it similar to it.

Well actually GirlMJ is wrong, if you go on Coldplay's website, you'll see that the lyrics above are right, except that it's "Victorians ghosts", and "to see God" not seek.

Jamfunct, your interpretations are so wrong. OMG! How can you get gunners from GOD? LMAO!! Gunners doesn't make sense to the rest of the song.

Anyways, there are quite a few mistakes on the lyrics for the song above, i just submitted what Chris really is singing, hopefully the Administration will change it. Here are the correct lyrics for the song:

At night they would go walking till the break in the day
    The morning is for sleeping
Through the dark streets they'd go searching to see God in their own way
Save the nighttime for your weeping
    Your Weeping

Singing la la la la lay
And the night over London lay

So we rode down to the river where the toiling ghosts spring
For their curses to be broken
We'll go underneath the arches where the witches are in the sea
There are ghost towns in the ocean
    The ocean

Singing la la la la lay
And the night over London rain

God is in the houses, and god is in my head
And all the cemeteries in London
I see god come in my garden, but I don't know what he said
For my heart it wasn't open
    Not open

Singing la la la la lay
And the night over London lay
Singing la la la la lay
There's no light over London today
