Be on my side
I'll be your side, baby
There is no reason
For you to hide
It's so hard for me
Staying here all alone
When you could be
Taking me for a ride
Ooh, sha la la, the weather
She could drag me over the rainbow
And send me away
Down by the river
I shot my baby
You take my hand
I'll take your hand, babe
Together, we'll get away
This much sadness
Is too much sorrow
It's impossible for me to stay
Yeah, yeah [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/b/buddy_miles/down_by_the_river.html ]
Ooh, sha la la, the weather
She could drag me over the rainbow
And send me away
Down by the river
I shot my baby
Down by the river
Be on my side
I'll be on your side, baby
There is no reason to hide
It's so hard for me
To stand here all alone
When you could be
Taking me for a ride
Ooh, sha la la, the weather
She could drag me over the rainbow
And send me away
Down by the river
I shot my baby
Down by the river
I shot my baby
I had just gotten out of the marine corps after 2 years in vietnam and i found i lost my fiance & baby, no place to live and no jobs. I was an electronics & communications engineer and wound up working as a house keeper in a tb sanitarium 1971. There was a personnel building, a 1 room w/ a shared bathroom. It had the most awesome sounding acoustical basement ever! I got a guitar and went down & played whenever i could. One night i got done playing this song and there were people there and they began clapping as i sat there with tears rolling down my cheeks. This one song, even to this day was very prophetic for me. Years later my beautiful wife of 7 years was missing for 5 months. One very bad day, they found her floating in a dirty river in chicago with her throat cut ear to ear. I don't play down by the river very much because it's way too meaningful but i just now played it, i remembered, and i wept.
