She was crying out my name standing in the driveway
Little bare feet wearing her cotton dress in my way
I still see the rain chasing tears down her face
It was back in october when said it was over and hid
Behind the door behind the shame of my conviction
Beside myself beside some empty pill prescription
I can hear her screamin now

No baby don't ya makin my heart hurt
Don't say those words take it back
You know you don't mean that

And you swore when I wore your ring
It meant forever
I got it on baby how can you say ide lost it
Oh you promised

Started cryin while I was sleepin
Waking up and reachin out
To a bed as empty as the heart inside of my chest
So I gathered up some pictures
Said I had some things to give her
Ide let her read a letter I had written her to give her
On the day we tied the knot

I saw her tears I saw em fall
When she read the part about growing old
I heard her words I heard her say it'll never work
And I hit my knees and cried

No baby don't ya makin my heart hurt
Don't say those words take it back
You know you don't mean that

And you swore when you wore my ring
It meant forever
Youve got it on baby how can you say you'd lost it
Yeah and you promised

We were different people then
Look at all the hateful things we've said
And I'm just as guilty but girl that's no way to be yeah

Take it easy baby I'm still broken
Memories enough to tear me wide open
When you see me girl you curse my name
Makes me wanna say no

No baby don't ya makin my heart hurt
Don't say those words take it back
You know you don't mean that

And you know when you wore my ring
We said forever
But you took it off baby
It's safe to say we're through
No matter what you do
You know I'll always love you
Hell I have to

Cause I promised

This song means they both made promises but they weren't kept. He realized he didn't keep his promise and he left her, but when he finally realizes he needs her its too late and she took of the ring too. They both made promises but the got broken and now so is their hearts. They regret it in the end and there is nothing to do about it, its already done. I listened to this song after my boyfriend of a year promised wed be together forever and then cheated on me.
