I've seen love go by my door
It's never been this close before
Never been so easy or so slow
I've been shooting in the dark too long
When something not right it's wrong
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Draggin clouds so high above
I've only known careless love
It's always hit me from below
This time around it's more correct
Right on target so direct
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Purple clover Queen Anne lace
Crimson hair across your face
You could make me cry if you don't know
Can't remember what I was thinking of
You might be spoiling me too much love
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Flowers on the hillside blooming crazy
Crickets talking back and forth in rhyme
Blue river running slow and lazy
I could stay with you forever
And never realize the time.

Situations have ended sad
Relationship have all been bad
Mine've been like Verlaine's and Rimbaud
But there's no way I can compare
All those scenes to this affair
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Yer gonna make me wonder what I'm doing
Staying far behind without you
Yer gonna make me wonder what I'm saying
Yer gonna make me give myself a good talking to.

I'll look for you in old Honolulu
San Francisco, Rastapula
Yer gonna have to leave me now I know
But I'll see you in the sky above
In the tall grass in the ones I love
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.

It's a guy who goes through relationships one after the other, and usually they don't mean much to him and are mostly physical, girls he doesn't really care about and who aren't on his level intellectually. (shooting in the dark, careless love, hit me from below). But this girl, she's on his level. She's his equal, his match at every turn. And she's really beautiful. But he knows this relationship will end, as all the others; almost more so because she's his equal -- she's a free spirit like him. She's her own character in her own story. But it's bliss, and when it's all over he'll never be the same. He'll still feel that magic of her touch in everything. The beautiful spring sky will hearken back to a day with her; the grass of a day spent lying around with her; and even the familiarity of his friends' faces in a moment of laughter will remind him of the infinite days he used to spend with her. He's going to let himself be hopelessly in love and will look back and chastise himself over it because he's too cool and collected for that. But deep down he'll always know that there was something about the time he was in love with her that kissed the infinite, that touched heaven.

To me, it sounds like the singer is talking to someone on their death bed. Maybe a spouse, maybe a friend.

Love is fleeting and although i am in love with you, and you might be in love with me too, i don't believe this is going to last. This makes me sad, but it's a sweet kind of sorrow.
