Bjork – Play Dead lyrics

Darling stop confusing me
With your wishful thinking
Hopeful embraces
Don't you understand?
I have to go through this
I belong to here where
No-one cares and no-one loves
No light no air to live in
A place called hate
The city of fear
I play dead
It stops the hurting
I play dead
And the hurting stops
It's sometimes just like sleeping
Curling up inside my private tortures
I nestle into pain
Hug suffering
Caress every ache
I play dead,
It stops the hurting

She believes love forever remains out of reach; it is a desired but unattainable illusion. Naively, others hope, wish, and even expect to love and to be loved, forever. She reexperiences her painful truth each time a lover desires from her that which she cannot give. To manage her contain her pain, she "plays dead," by letting go of the resistance to pain. Rather, she embraces and nurtures her sorrow. She allows herself to fully experience and accept her sorrow, as suggested by the actions of "nestle," "hug," and caress. She understands that for some, love is too painful and creates paralleled joy and despair. Through practicing non-attachment she can choose not to allow herself to get deeply emotionally connected.
