I started a joke
Which started the whole world crying
But I didn't see, oh no, that the joke was on me, oh no
I started to cry
Which started the whole world laughing
Oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me
I looked at the skies running my hands over my eyes
And I fell out of bed hurting my head from things that I said
Till I finally died
Which started the whole world laughing
Oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me
I looked at the skies running my hands over my eyes
And I fell out of bed hurting my head from things that I said
Till I finally died
Which started the whole world living
Oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me
Oh no, that the joke was on me [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/b/bee_gees/i_started_a_joke_live.html ]
I understand it as existence and death and their endless returns (the samsara in buddhism). The "joke" is to start living in the outside (= existence) ; every "thing" happens then (the "whole world") ! What a joke to beleive in maya, in the illusion of permanence , of something else than my own view (see hologramic paradigm for such concept ). The joke is on me : sure ! The world is crying : sad world until i fall out of bed and realize how stupid to say (and think) that manifestation was sad... How funny for "the world" to see that i didn't understand the reasons of my stupid sadness ! How sad, a contrario, for the world to see that i was not taking manifestation seriously and pretending it was a joke ! Dying will not stop the manifestation of life : it starts again directly... That's what i understand... And i can figure out that the writer of this song, who was for sure on some drugs at that time (laurel canyon crowd in the 60's ? ) had seen the process of the so-called life and death through a personal experience. Be (or stay ! ) happy !
