Aztec Two-step – Highway Song lyrics

The gate was closing, the sun was folding
Her hand was waving me good-bye
Remember me to the highway signs
The colored lights and the highway signs
Remember me to my friends so kind
Tell them I am fine

The night had fallen, the moon was calling
A whippoorwill sang out it's song
There is no need for you to go
Like the seeds the wind would blow
It is best now that the time moves slow
You know someday she'll know

But today is nearly over
It's nearly over now, it's nearly gone
And tomorrow doesn't matter now

'Cause nothing matters now, except the dawn

The gate left open the sun had woken
The dew left footprints to my door
She walked in slowly her image holy
She knelt beside me on the floor
I remembered you to the highway signs
The colored lights and the highway lines
I said hello to your friends so kind
And told them you were fine

But today is nearly over
It's nearly over now, it's nearly gone
And tomorrow doesn't matter now
'Cause nothing matters now, except the dawn

I totally agree that this song is incredible, hauntingly beautiful. I think it's about acceptance of impending death, reconciling one's life, and awaiting whatever comes next. The song reminds me of Nick Drake's songs "Northern Sky" and "From the Morning," and the Secret Machine's version of Dylan's "Girl from the North Country" (on their "The Road Leads Where It's Led" EP).

I'm not really sure what this song is about, other than having your lover to remember you after you're gone, wherever that may be. The lyrics kind of lend themselves to mean different things to different people. But I do know one thing for certain - there is no finer song to listen to at sundown when you're traveling in your car alone. This song is spiritual and enlightening to the core, and the sweet intertwining harmonies of Rex and Neil, the strings in the background, and Neil Schulman's oh-so - tastefully played lead guitar licks make this one of the most beautiful songs on the planet. If it had been pushed by RCA after it's release, it would have been a monster hit. It deserves better than what history gave it, that's for sure!
