Anberlin – Soft Skeletons lyrics

Dear little girl, so much hurt for such a young age.
Trapped inside a pretty little lie.
Your bodies betrayed.

Don't fix your eyes on a fix you rely on.
Fixed her eyes on a fix she relies upon.

Stand unafraid, all the good souls stand on unafraid.

When life starts to burn, and the pain returns.
I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight.
There's life in your veins. These needles are chains to hold you down.
How can you expect to win this war?
Too afraid to fight. Are you too afraid to fight?

Dear little one, there was so much pain.
Time you can't replace.
Trapped inside, too afraid to cry.
And now hands and bruises cover face.

Don't fix your eyes on a fix you rely on.
Fixed her eyes on a fix...

When life starts to burn, and the pain returns.
I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight.
There's life in your veins. These needles are chains to hold you down.
How can you expect to win this war if you're too afraid to fight?

Stand unafraid.
All the good souls stand unafraid.
Stand unafraid, all the good souls stand unafraid.

When life starts to burn, and the pain returns.
I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight.
There's life in your veins. These needles are chains to hold you down.
How can you expect to win this war if you're too afraid to fight?
When life starts to burn, and the pain returns.
I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight.
There's life in your veins. These needles are chains to hold you down.
How can you expect to win this war if you're too afraid to fight?

This is obviously about someone watching someone they love struggle with drug addictions. "when the light starts to burn. " meaning a cigarette lighter. "she fixed her eyes on a fix she relys upon. " apparently she needs a fix on a drug. "there's life in her veins. " he's reffering to a drug that can be taking by an injection through the skin such as heroine, which flows through the veins. The drug is her life and is flowing trough her veins. And when he says. " these needles are chains, to hold you down" he saying the needles she is using to put drugs in her system is holding her back from doing good things in life. " and this part is just my opinion but when he says "how can you expect to win this war when your to afriad to fight. " i think the person wants to quit but is scared to seek professional or clinical. No i am not a drug head. I am a 14 yr old girl and this song is very clear to me. I was just singing the chorus and my friend goes " that songs about drugs. Isn't it" so yeah.

Honestly, I think that this song is much deeper than the previous posters are saying. I don't think it is referring to an actual young girl. I think he's talking about someone who is watching a person they love struggle with an addiction. There's a lot of textual evidence to support this claim. I think it's really beautiful how he says "I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight." Lovely song.
