Adele said the song is about a boy who she fell madly in love with but couldn't deal with the fact that he was bisexual; she said she couldn't deal with fighting off both girls and boys. The song is about him and how he was everything she'd ever hoped for but when it came down to it she couldn't be with him. Hence the lyric, "all i say is just what i'm hoping for'
