'Close As Strangers' is about long distance relationships. Since this type of relationship is one of the hardest to be in, there are a lot of difficulties in maintaining it. Both sides should have an equal amount of trust to each other, or else it wouldn't work. However, depression or disappointment might appear in few months of separation leading to giving up, arguing and worse, breaking up. That's why 'trust' is very important when you're in a relationship. I think we know that, it's just that it's hard to accept. So acceptance is another challenge.

This song also describes each sides. The girl's and the boy's side, the one who left temporarily. One problem that happens a lot in relationship is assuming that something bad is happening while there is none. Sometimes a person leaving gets judged by finding someone new... that's wrong, really wrong. The girl in the song is hurting, wanting to give up but she doesn't consider her boyfriend's feelings - that it hurts him too.

And what happened... they talk on broken lines - things they missed in each other. They became distant, cold... like they're becoming couples to strangers, but because there's no closure they are close, they should have commitment, but at the same time, it's like they're knowing each other again. Like strangers.

This song is related their new lives extremely. It sort of explains why Michael thinks the hardest part of being famous is 1) relationships and 2) trusting people. It basically explains that, while on tour, they don't get to see the other partner in the relationship (partner because it doesn't necessarily have to do with a romantic relationship, but with a relationship between family, old friends, and dogs |not Calum|). In the end it explains how they can't wait to get back to their family, friends and pets, and rebuild their relationship. The song would go great with a reunion of any kind.
